Audience is a very important rhetorical element. It was also one that I had some struggle with when writing my essays. Different audiences require different writing formats and ideas. Determining and addressing a specific audience is very important when when writing. If you are trying to address an audience whose interest is in whether a Honda or Toyota is better you would not be writing about why Coca Cola is the best soda company.

The struggle I faced was determining what audience I am addressing. I would state that the audience is “my professor” or that it is whoever is interested in the topic I am discussing. Professor Carr pointed out that the audience needs to be more specific as stating that everyone with an interest of the topic won’t necessarily be reading my essay.
